We begin each session with the idea that dancing is simply walking to music, reminding our students that they have been taking forward steps, backward steps and side steps most of their lives. Now, all they have to do is take those steps in time to music!
Our first year students start with one of the most well-known ballroom dances … the Fox-Trot. This simple pattern of 2-steps forward and 2-steps to the side allows our students to get comfortable in a formal dance position without having to focus on complex dance combinations. We teach very basic patterns, encouraging the gentlemen to take lead, guiding their partners around the dance floor. Once they learn the basic pattern in Fox-Trot, we transpose that same pattern into a second, completely different dance, the East Coast Swing, reminding them that just because the music changes, the basic footwork pattern does not change. Our third dance, the Cha-Cha, brings a Latin flare to our program along with a completely different dance pattern and more contemporary music choices. Some of our classes advance quickly enough to add a fourth dance option … the Salsa – a faster moving and more complex dance.
